This is what I get for spending time with my wife last night. She wanted to hang out and watch some TV together, for lovey-dovey sake and all that jazz. I agreed, of course, because I have my priorities in the correct order (this is in reference to that delightful conversation between Syl and Anonymous last week...simply delightful).
I had come home from work, and my boys started asking me all about the patch 4.0.1 that'll hit today in the states, I guess it'll be Wednesday for Europe, right? Anyway, they were asking me all about the patch and if this or that talent would still be available, etc. It was not a delightful conversation, it was pure funjoy of a conversation.
After that we had some dinner (priorities again in order), watched some of the Monday Night Football game wherein Mr Favre threw another interception to lose yet another big game. Then I got on my DK. His name is Trezzoth, on the Llane realm alliance side, in case you were wondering. He's guildless too, if anyone would like him. I had server transferred him over to help "heirloom-out" my boys' alts, and one of my own. I took just about every heirloom piece from my main server (Malfurion-US), but still didn't have everything I wanted. My boys wanted me to go into Wintergrasp and get the PvP heirloom caster staff and 2H sword with Strength on it (don't ask me for names, I'm too lazy to look them up). I got those that that thrashing sword from WG as well, the one that sometimes does an additional attack.
After gettting that stuff I realized that I was a few pieces short of having every PvE heirloom piece in my bank. I could still use the shoulders/chest for Elemental/Resto shaman (it'll be a Dwarf shaman on this server), but I didn't have them. So Saturday I began to run some heroics for some quick badges, by Sunday night I got the shoulders. All that was left was the chest piece and I'd have EVERYTHING.
So when I got home last night and saw that I had 3 emblems of triumph, I dispaired, but I wanted to give it a go anyway. So after 1) spending quality time talking with and listening to my kids, 2) sharing a family meal, 3) enjoying some quality alone time with my wife, 4) doing other normal life things that take priority over WoW, I finally was able to get online and make a push for 40 emblems.
Queues were fast (about 9 min or so for my DPS DK), groups were good. By 11:50pm PDT I had 36 emblems, I only needed 4 more. There was a group trying to go Malygos (the weekly), but they only had 5 people and there were 11 min until server shutdown. I contemplated another random, but 9 min in queue would only leave 2 min to finish the heroic. I don't care how fast your tank goes, you can't do a full clear in 2 min.
So I was left 4 short. After all the prices are reset to balance around level 85's, heirlooms will be significantly more expensive for my 80. Sure, I'll have time to earn those justice points before 4.0.3 when the new race/class combos and world changes hit, but I really wanted it last night. Alas, 4 short. It wasn't the first time I didn't achieve a goal. I certainly don't regret taking care of RL first, I just wish I had an extra 30 min or so here or there.
I do hope anonymous stops by for a delightful conversation of my own, but I shant worry too much. There are literally 4,498 4.0.1 class guides, 2,674 UI guides, and 3,458 other general 4.0.1 news guides on the internet somewhere (those figures are accurate according to the aliens who tell me so). I won't do one here, unless someone pays me, but I hope you find something useful somewhere. I admit, humbly so, that I do know everything and any guide I wrote would be perfection itself, but I don't wish to make others feel bad. So I leave it to you fine folk to tell me what to do and how to do it. May your blades never dull, unless you're fighting against me in a BG, then don't bother fighting at all because you know you'll lose.

Ninja Solution Ho!
With the introduction of the LFD tool came another change, loot rules in dungeons. Now the dungeon finder will automatically default to Need before Greed and there are armor type restrictions, so now a Pali healer cannot roll need on SP cloth pieces. That same pali has to ask others to pass on it, if they REALLY want the gear or simply hope that nobody else rolls need and they win the greed roll.
But there is a piece of gear that has been overlooked, a little slot that can be needed by all and ninja'd by equal amounts. The back piece, i.e. the cloak. I was thinking about this as I ran into Blackrock Depths this weekend. I don't know my way around that place, so I can't tell you exactly where I was. But I do know that we killed some important dude and he dropped a nice back piece with intellect & spell power. Great, I'm the only caster here (aside from our lovely Druid healer), so there should be no resistance in needing this.
Wrong.
Stupid huntard rolled need...and WON! This counts as a clear violation of loot rules and forever classifies this hunter as either a total noob, plain stupid, or a ninja. I whispered to the hunter, and tried to be really nice, asking if they could truly benefit from a cloak with spell power on it. The hunter whispered back that "Yes, I definately need it."
So, the ninja is stupid, great! Others chimed in to voice their displeasure at the hunter rolling need, and did so in party chat. The hunter got a bit defensive and eventually said that they would give the back piece to the healer (btw, I rolled higher than the healer - 29 v 9 - but whatever, the hunter was about to capitulate).
I then did something I don't normally do, I pursued the issue further.
"You'll excuse me, but I can't help but think but that hunters don't ever need spellpower, but I think you know that. Very well, if you wish to keep it then that's your choice."
In response I recieved a "chill out" for my continued interruptions into this hunter's play time. And a few other rants, but the "chill out" was touching. All in all I don't think I was ever rude, although my frustrations came out in my whispers to the hunter. I ended up leaving on principle, and thanked everyone but the hunter for a nice run.
So I was a bit childish, I really don't care. I rarely, if ever, speak up like that in dungeons, but every now and then you've got to stand up for yourself, right? It got me thinking, however, if there was a way to stem the tide of ninjas even more than has been done to date. Back pieces can be needed by all, so there's got to be some sort of mechanism to prevent a ninja'd cloak. Here's my crazy idea.
We have a "Vote Kick" system currently, on top of that let's add a "Ninja Labeled" system, where if the 4 other party members in a dungeon percieve that some stupid hunter has rolled Need on a spell power cloak, for instance, then they can vote to label that person a "Ninja".
The Ninja label would be added in front of their name, and remain above their head for one week or until that player ran 3 consecutive dungeons without rolling need on any piece of gear, even if that gear could truly be considered an upgrade and the armor type match their default armor. Imagine strolling around any capital city or Dalaran with the Ninja title above your head. More people may place you on their ignore list, worried to be grouped with a known felon.
Sure, there could be abuses to the system, but there can be abuses to the vote kick system too, right? A group of 5, 4 of whom are in the same guild, kick the 5th right before the final boss. Sound familiar? But how many of these groups have you been in? I have been in zero (0). I imagine that most groups would never abuse the Ninja Labeling system, just as most don't abuse the vote kick one today. Plus, to be labeled a Ninja you would need 4, not just 3, to effectuate the change. That would be a tall order for a truly random pug unless the infraction was legitimate.
There has to be some sort of public shame to being a ninja. And if that didn't work, then I may even go so far as to suggest more drastic measures...more on that later, however.
For the most part, the ninja has been hampered by the tools currently implemented in the LFD tool, but they still exist and are stealing our cloaks right off our backs. Unite, my brothers and sisters, and put to shame all Ninjas for their dirty, underhanded tricks, and reclaim our loot and our right to fairly outroll another spell-caster!

Epix
Boxing in Las Vegas used to be the pinnacle of sporting events in this nation. There was actually a time when, sit down and shut up football fans, a heavyweight championship fight was bigger than the Super Bowl. Doh! I think the NFL just fined me for using the term Super Bowl. Oops, I did it again! (makes moaning sound)
Today I suppose the UFC is taking over boxing’s failed market, although I’ve never been a real fan of men hugging each other while lying on a mat in tight spandex undies. But I digress.
A classic call by the boxing announcer at the start of the fight was thus:
“In this corner we have the Sultain of Pain, the Czar of Scars, the Master of Disaster…Biiiiiiiiiiiiiig Miiiiiiiiiiike! And in the other corner, hailing from the outer-most reaches of the Andes mountains in South America, comes the Warden of Flesh, Destroyer of Souls, the one, the only, Jooooorrrrggggeeeee Guuuueeerrrrrrrroooo!
Crowd cheers wildly with excitement.
WoW kinda has had an epic boxing match of their own as the most recent expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, as unfolded. In one corner are all those who played and raided back in Vanilla and maybe even in TCB, in the other corner comes the challenger. The casual who demands free epics at little cost or effort in any raiding situation. The bane of the purists existence. The fight went back and forth: “Epics are handed out like candy, what ever happened to them being unique, truly epic?” vs “Hey, I work all day pal! Unlike you, who has no life and plays wow 14 hours/day, I feed a family and only have a few hours a week to devote to raiding. But that doesn’t mean that epic gear should be withheld from me, that I am held back from seeing content that I’m clearly paying for with my subscription. I deserve epics just as much as the hard core, no-life losers.”
Well, we’re in the 9th round and it looks like momentum may be shifting slightly back to the “old guys” of raiding. Quoting blue poster Ancilorn:
“Well, hopefully this comes as good news. We're actually working on restoring the epic feeling to epic items in Cataclysm. Epic loot should be epic, and something to be very proud of. Our plan is to try and get the Heroic -> Blue Gear and Raid -> Purple Gear balance back.”
Well, well, well! Looks like Harry and Ron will have to stop copying off Hermione’s homework every night and get out and raid in order to don some epic gear instead of just running little ‘ol heroics. I can’t really say I care that much. Oh, that’s not a good selling point for a blog. Here, let me try again.
THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! WHAT A CROCK! I HAVEN’T PLAYED FOR A YEAR AND A HALF JUST TO HAVE MY WELFARE EPICS TAKEN FROM ME OUT OF THE BLUE! SCREW YOU, DEATHWING! LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE TO THE CASUAL, YOU’RE SCREWING EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US. (Not the best image, but if Deathwing is motivated I’m sure that he can…)
Well that just won’t do, I’m not much into yelling. Give me one more chance to state a definitive opinion on this.
*clear throat*
It’s about time! Epic gear has ceased to be epic, in every sense of the word. Gone are the days where by standing in the center of the trade district in Stormwind can one be defined by the design of the gear he’s wearing. The day anyone turns 80, with enough time and motivation, can have 4-8 pieces of epic gear, sometimes more depending on how much money they have and RNG. It’s been an absolute joke, and it progressively worsened as the WotLK xpac progressed. I’m glad that Blizzard has started to reward some of the older players, we who knew what it was like to work week after week just to grind a few pieces of epic gear…if we were lucky. I certainly don’t expect it to be as hard as it was in Vanilla, but it brings a smile to my face and warms my heart to know that the casual won’t be as epic as me anymore.
So who’s side are you on? Or are you like Treebeard, on nobody’s side because nobody’s on your side? How, exactly, do you feel about this statement and how do you THINK it will play out? Once the second raid tier opens up in Cataclysm do you think that “welfare epics”, as I’ve heard them called before, be the norm again? Or does Blizz have a built-in mechanic to deal with the issue of such easy access to raid-level gear for the fresh 80?
My honest opinion is that in general, this is a good thing. I don’t think it will be as hard as Vanilla, nor as easy as WotLK. Even as a super casual, I don’t mind epic gear only being available in raids (at least to start out with), mainly because I’m not a gear whore. I don’t define my abilities or worth my the gear I have on. I play the game to have fun how I want to. Gear helps make difficult content less difficult, and for that I’m grateful. I never expected or asked for handouts, so to go back to a system where epic loot will be considered more “epic” than it is today, I think will be a good change.
How long it will last, who knows? But I’ll take it while I can get it.

Gear Score: Who benefits the most?
Backdrop: I have been asked to heal ICC with one of my toons that isn't Gronthe. I don't want to reveal the name to protect the identity of everyone else. This particular toon of mine is dual-spec DPS/Heals. My main spec is DPS and is more than qualified to run ICC. My offspec is heals, and the gear isn't quite up to par with my DPS set. Actually, it isn't quite up to par with anybody in my raid group. However, lately I have been asked to take on more healing responsibilities.
Technically speaking, my healing gear is right around the minimum to enter ICC, that's good, right? I have known and witnessed DPS'ers who seem to outplay their gear because they know how to play their class so well they can put out superior DPS, outdoing others with much higher gear score. I am one of these, when I DPS. I am really, really good and can put out heavy numbers, I know how and when to use my abilities to CC, interrupts, etc. I know my DPS class like my own children (maybe that's not a good thing, but I'm a great dad, so shut up!).
I haven't been healing very long, however, but I've somehow managed to gather some descent gear along the way. My problem is that it seems that it's difficult for a healer to out-heal an equally skilled healer with lesser gear. IN MY OPINION (not imo), gear score may just be important for healing classes. With improved gear comes greater spell power, haste, crit rating, and more gem slots. All of these improve the power of my heals and the speed at which I can get them off so people don't die. Lesser healing gear means the opposite, smaller heals and slower casting...thus less healing. For ICC, this is bad.
My raid group is young, only half of us have significant raiding experience, so some are still learning the ropes. I'm on the younger end, especially as a healer. Maybe I am underestimating my skill, maybe that's why I keep being asked to heal. Maybe I do so well our RL is willing to put what I view as an undergeared healer in the group, expecting to succeed in the process. Problem: we're only "sort-of" succeeding. Nobody has said "it's the healer's fault", mainly because we have a self-depricating tank who takes blame for everything. But I feel it's my fault. I also am beginning to resent my RL because I know I'm not geared or experienced enough to heal ICC but he keeps putting me on duty.
I feel like this is an entry into my personal journal, or that I'm just thinking out loud and you have to listen to my ramblings. But I can't help but think that for healers, gear score, even though it's not the "end-all" in determining success, certainly seems to be much more important than for you DPS'ers (I'm not going to talk about tanks because I just don't know).
I dare you to tell me I'm wrong.

Like...Gag me with spoon!
If you don't know what a Valley Girl is, see here. Having been born and raised in New England, the Valley Girl life never really appealed to me. All I did was make fun of the way they talked.
"So Billy, you want to, you know like, you want to go play football?"
"Totally like, duh! That would be like so totally wicked" (The wicked was and is heavily used where I grew up)
"Awesome, why, like I am so excited. Let's so go like, now!"
You have to remember that intonation was like so key to Valspeak. It's pretty much the opposite of Ben Stein in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. If his speach was dull grey, a Valley Girl was hot pink and every color in the rainbow.
I wonder what it would sound like in WoW?
VG1: "Hey Shrentblablabla, like whatever your name is. Check out my new eipc, it's like, so totally purple"
VG2: "I know right?"
VG1: "Yeah, why, I'm now so much more powerfuler than you. I've got like, so many hit points."
VG2: "Like, duh, I know right? But are you like, trying to say that I'm like, just not cool or something?"
VG1: "Duh!"
VG2: "I'm gonna like, get me some better epics than you. You'll be on the floor like, so crying."
VG1: "You wish. Your like, such a noob, you don't have any epics"
VG2: "What EVER! So like, you know, I'm gonna like, so get me some of that."
VG1: "Some of like, what?"
VG2: "You know, like some of that awesomeness stuff, you know. Like, Purples!"
VG1: "Whatever! You're still like, a total noob."
In other words, LFM for ICC, 20K GS, 50K DPS, know fight, no noobs, no fail group (or you're so like, not even coming).
"Ugh! Gag me with a spoon! Like, as if I'm ever gonna have like, that kinda DPS. That guy is like, a total loser. C'mon Shertblablabla whatever your name is. Let's like, get so outta here. Server Transfer!"
Yeah, that's right, I'm talking to you Mr Outrageous expectation sir.
